Jess Fishlock: Euro 2017 is big chance for Wales to qualify

n her latest column for BBC Wales Sport, Seattle Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock looks forward to Wales' opening 2017 Women's European Championship qualifier against Austria and reflects on a successful season for her club in the National Women's Soccer League. I'm really excited by Wales' Euro 2017 campaign and we've got a big chance to qualify for a major finals for the first time. After missing out on the World Cup, there's been a year of waiting around until this campaign and Wales manager Jayne Ludlow has taken over in what has been a transition period. We made huge strides under our former manager Jarmo Matikainen and it's up to us now to build on that and take the next step, which is to qualify. We start with probably one of the most important games of the whole campaign, away to Austria. If we get a win it would put us in such a good position in the group. We are the third seeds behind Norway and Austria and it's going to be a battle between the three countries to reach the finals in the Netherlands. This time around, the top two go through to an expanded European Championships and therefore it's not the end of the world if you slip up here and there. But we have to take points off those two top seeds and also do our job against Israel and Kazakhstan. If we can get results and points in the opening two away games against Austria and Norway then we will be in a really good position. We've got everyone back fit now, which will be a huge boost for us.

Tony Adams: Sir Alex and Man United wanted me

Tony Adams: Sir Alex and Man United wanted me

Tony Adams has claimed that he was close to joining Manchester United twice during his 22-year playing career with Arsenal.
Adams, who captained Arsenal from 1988 until his retirement in 2002, says Sir Alex Ferguson approached him “every day” in regards to joining Manchester United before Arsene Wenger was appointed Gunners manager in 1996.
The now 48-year-old subsequently stayed at Highbury, winning two Premier League and FA Cup doubles in 1997/98 and 2001/02.
After former team-mate Emmanuel Petit’s revelations that deciding not to join United due to his (now divorced) wife was one of the biggest regrets of his career, Adams says that although he was tempted to move to Old Trafford, he eventually stayed – and found his salary tripled.

“Alex Ferguson wanted to sign me twice, just before Arsene Wenger came to the club,” said Adams.
“I was ready for a change and he was onto me every day.
“The chairman at the time, Peter Hill-Wood, convinced me that there was a good man on the way and that we were going to be ambitious financially.
“I found my salary tripled, which was amazing. Arsene came and the rest is history.”
Claimed? Didn't Ferguson just say exactly this himself in an interview with Sky Sports? Ha ha.

Dawson goal beats Liverpool

The centre-back, who signed from Tottenham last summer, rose unmarked and onside on 37 minutes to head home Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross.
Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances, going closest in the first half through Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson on a night Steven Gerrard was rested.
The home side worked tirelessly to keep the Champions League hopefuls, now short of the top four by seven points, at bay and a second successive Premier League victory sees Hull move four points clear of safety with four games remaining.
Hull boss Steve Bruce fielded an unchanged side from the one that beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday and they continued the huge degree of commitment and work-rate that bore that victory.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers started Mario Balotelli for the second successive time, but he was ineffective and frustrated as early as the first minute, clashing with Tom Huddlestone and then Jake Livermore.
Hull striker Dame N’Doye threatened first, heading a Sone Aluko cross straight at Simon Mignolet on seven minutes before Coutinho stung the hands of Steve Harper at the other end with a first-time shot from a corner.
But it was Balotelli who was arguably at fault for Dawson’s goal – playing the defender onside in his own penalty area despite three other Hull players standing in an offside position.
Henderson forced Harper into another good save low to his right when latched on to a cross from Jordon Ibe, who was lively before he was replaced in the second half.
And Balotelli was further exasperated on the stroke of half-time when he demanded the ball early from Glen Johnson, but did not get it, and was then too late to latch on to the right-back’s flash across the goal-line.
The second half was introduced with a moment of comedy, as N’Doye took to the pitch wearing the shirt of Abel Hernandez and had to be alerted to the fact by referee Lee Probert, before dashing to the sidelines to switch.
But the fact Liverpool did not get the ball in the attacking third again until just before the hour-mark was no laughing matter, and they were limited to wayward shots off-target from outside the box for the rest of the game.
The Reds remain seven points short of fourth-placed Manchester United, with their Champions League hopes seemingly dissipated, but Hull lift themselves above Aston Villa into 15th in the table.

Leeds half dozen withdraw on eve of Charlton game in Championship

The never-ending chaos at Leeds continued on Friday as six players withdrew from Saturday's game at Charlton citing injury.
Italian quartet Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Dario del Fabro and Marco Silvestri, Frenchman Souleymane Doukara and Albanian Edgar Cani all told beleaguered head coach Neil Redfearn they were injured and could not travel to London.
Five of the half dozen were signed by banned president Massimo Cellino, while Cani's deal was set up by the Italian before he was banned by the Football League for failing its Owners and Directors Test.
After receiving criticism from Leeds fans on social media after the story surfaced, Antenucci wrote: "I'm reading a lot bad thing about myself in the last time.tomorrow i'll not be in the match Because I got injured yesterday.it's the truth.
"I read so much wickedness and insults in many posts. i'm a serious professional but if someone likes to insult me there is no problem. my injury is in the right leg did yesterday in training .a muscle injury."
Goalkeeper Silvestri also took to social media, posting a picture of a cut on his back which he suffered during Tuesday's loss at Norwich. He, Antenucci and Silvestri have been first-team regulars this season, with Cani, Del Fabro and Doukara resigned to roles on the fringes.
Redfearn's position at Elland Road has become increasingly threatened over recent weeks, despite leading the club to Championship safety after taking off from ill-fated predecessors David Hockaday and Darko Milanic.
He saw assistant Steve Thompson lose his job without warning on April 2 and his own deal, which expires at the end of the season, looks increasingly unlikely to be renewed under the club's current regime.
Cellino is currently banned after being being found guilty of not paying tax on a yacht in Italy. He has been banned from holding any influence over the club since the end of January and is set to return in a fortnight's time.
Leeds were not available for comment.

Christian Benteke disappointed despite hat-trick against QPR

Christian Benteke was left disappointed after his stunning hat-trick against Queens Park Rangers failed to yield three points for Aston Villa.
Benteke struck twice in the first half to give his side a 2-1 lead at the interval, before he salvaged a draw when he made it 3-3 with an exquisite free-kick after Clint Hill and Charlie Austin had put Villa's relegations rivals in the driving seat.
And, while being pleased with his overall performance, the Belgian believes Villa were unfortunate not to claim the three points against a QPR side he felt were more efficient in front of goal.
“I wanted more [from the game]. It’s always nice to score a hat-trick but it just a shame because we didn’t get the three points,” he told Sky Sports.
“Today we deserved three points, we were better than them but they were more efficient than us because they got three chances and scored each of them.

AM's Week 29 Player Picks

Welcome to Week 29 of my player picks for the Yahoo Fantasy Premier League game, as we're treated to a full round of ten fixtures across Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Before I begin please note The Rotoworld Cup 4th Round results (from last week) are due and will be published over the weekend. Good luck if you're still involved in the competition.

You find me in a particularly good mood after an excellent Week 28. Not only did Tottenham bounce back from Cup final heartache with two massive wins to stay in the hunt for a Champions League spot, but my Yahoo fantasy team AM FC had its best game-week of the season.

When only two teams are playing two games I always advise readers to invest heavily in "double gamers", and I apologise for not being available to reiterate this last week. By taking this approach you give yourself two shots at success while also playing the averages. If a player averages six fantasy points per game then the chances are you wouldn't be interested in him in a regular week, but if he's playing twice this equates to the possibility of 12 points if he matches his regular contributions, and there's always a chance this is exceeded when a player has two bites at the cherry. This is why Ryan Mason and Matt Phillips should've been high on your list of considerations for Week 28, especially with prices tags below £6million.
AM FC was filled with eight double gamers - Hugo LlorisJan Vertonghen, Yun Suk-young, Mason, Phillips, Christian Eriksen, Charlie Austin and Harry Kane - and was rewarded with a season high 181 points for the week to move up from 2300th to 1003rd overall. We have another double week later in the season (for Chelsea and Leicester) and so I'll hammer home this advice when the time comes. The strategy doesn't guarantee 100% success (see my selection of QPR's Yun Suk-young) but you're giving yourself the best opportunity of a massive weekly total.
