Tony Adams has claimed that he was close to joining Manchester United twice during his 22-year playing career with Arsenal.
Adams, who captained Arsenal from 1988 until his retirement in 2002, says Sir Alex Ferguson approached him “every day” in regards to joining Manchester United before Arsene Wenger was appointed Gunners manager in 1996.
The now 48-year-old subsequently stayed at Highbury, winning two Premier League and FA Cup doubles in 1997/98 and 2001/02.
After former team-mate
Emmanuel Petit’s revelations that deciding not to join United due to his (now divorced) wife was one of the biggest regrets of his career, Adams says that although he was tempted to move to Old Trafford, he eventually stayed – and found his salary tripled.

“Alex Ferguson wanted to sign me twice, just before Arsene Wenger came to the club,” said Adams.
“I was ready for a change and he was onto me every day.
“The chairman at the time, Peter Hill-Wood, convinced me that there was a good man on the way and that we were going to be ambitious financially.
“I found my salary tripled, which was amazing. Arsene came and the rest is history.”
Claimed? Didn't Ferguson just say exactly this himself in an interview with Sky Sports? Ha ha.
